Capricorn New Moon: A Reflective Mandala Journey for the New Year

As the calendar turns to a fresh year, there’s no better zodiac sign to usher in new beginnings than Capricorn. Known for their steadfast determination, goal-setting prowess, and strategic approach, Capricorns are natural leaders in the realm of manifestation. For those of us who like to use the changing of the year as an opportunity to revisit our intentions and set new ones, Capricorn’s grounded energy offers the perfect foundation. I find that the start of the year is a time to reconnect with my personal goals, whether they involve health, creativity, or nurturing relationships.

The Capricorn new moon is on December 30, 2024. Make time for this activity any time in the next two weeks.

This year, I invite you to join me in a creative ritual that combines mindfulness with art-making. Creating mandala art offers a beautiful opportunity for quiet reflection, providing space to reconnect with where you are now and where you want to focus your energy. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a beginner, mandalas offer a powerful tool for self-discovery and intention-setting. So, grab your art supplies and let’s explore how you can craft a Capricorn-inspired mandala to ring in the new year with purpose and clarity.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

This is your chance to get creative! Feel free to use your favorite art materials or try something new for the new year. In my example, I used stencils from StencilGirl Products, an Art Graf Watercolor Set, and mixed media paper. But really, the options are endless: colored pencils, markers, acrylic paints—whatever feels right to you. Find a list of links for the supplies I used at the end of this article.

Step 2: Set an Intention

Before you begin drawing, take a moment to pause and reflect on what you want to manifest in 2025. What are your hopes, dreams, and desires for the year ahead? Maybe you want to focus on your health, creativity, or deepening your connections with others. Dedicate this time and artwork to reflecting on where you’re at and where you want to go. Trust that setting this intention will guide your process.

Step 3: Draw the Four Gates Mandala

For this step, I used a Four Gates Mandala stencil from StencilGirl Products, which creates a simple yet powerful structure for your design. As you trace out the mandala’s outline, notice how each of the four gates represents a different aspect of the self. This is a great time to check in with yourself:

  • Body: How is your body feeling? Are there areas of tension, tightness or pain?
  • Mind: What’s the mental chatter in your mind? Are you focused on the past, present, or future?
  • Emotions: How are you emotionally responding? Do you feel excitement for the year ahead or perhaps some heaviness tied to past experiences?
  • Spirit: Open your heart and listen to the quiet messages from your inner wise self. What do you hear?

As you draw, pay attention to these sensations, thoughts, and emotions. If difficult feelings arise, greet them with kindness and compassion. Creating this mandala can be a form of healing, allowing space to acknowledge what’s surfacing. Trust that the process is as important as the finished artwork.

Step 4: Draw the Root Chakra in the Center

The root chakra is all about grounding, stability, and security—perfect for Capricorn’s earthy energy. Draw the root chakra symbol in the center of your mandala to anchor your design. This symbol will help you stay centered as you work towards your goals for the year ahead.

Step 5: Add Details

This is where you can really have fun and add your unique touch. Play with patterns, shapes, and additional layers to enrich the design. Whether it’s adding more intricate details or keeping it simple, the beauty of a mandala lies in its personal expression. I added the glyphs (symbols) for Capricorn at each gate and Saturn the ruling planet of Capricorn in each corner. I think of the placement of these symbols as inviting me into the center of the mandala and supporting the spiritual journey.

Step 6: Add Color

Capricorns are an earth sign, so using earthy tones like browns, reds, and deep greens will perfectly capture their grounded energy. For the root chakra in the center, I recommend using shades of red, which are believed to promote grounding and stability. As you color, think about the energy these colors hold and how they can support your process. In my mandala, I worked with watercolors and added salt to the wet paint for an earthy texture. I also added a touch of gold to represent the value I place on my commitment and dedication to my goals.

Step 7: Reflect on Your Design

After finishing your mandala, take time to sit quietly and reflect on the artwork and the process. I lit a red candle to set the tone. What messages or insights have come up for you? What do you notice about your energy, focus, and emotions throughout the creation? Writing down your reflections in a journal will help you remember this moment of intention-setting, which will serve as a powerful anchor throughout the year.

Step 8: Add the Date

On the back of your mandala, add the date that you created it. This simple step can help you track your journey and revisit your intentions as the year progresses. It’s easy to forget when exactly we made something, but having a date as a reference helps you reflect on how far you’ve come.
