When you sit down to create, what shows up?
Self-doubt. Emotional waves. Restlessness. Fatigue. Desire.
What if these were not distractions, but doorways?
The Four Gates Mandala Practice is a creative method I developed to help us meet these inner experiences with awareness and compassion through art making. As we draw and design a four-gated mandala, we begin to recognize thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and desires as natural parts of the creative process rather than obstacles to overcome.
Inspired by traditional mandalas and yantras that feature four gateways, this practice brings symbolic structure into a personal and reflective creative experience. Instead of pushing aside what arises while we are making art, we welcome it. Each gate becomes an invitation to pause, notice, and respond with kindness.
Over time, the mandala becomes more than a design. It becomes a quiet space for reflection and integration.

The Four Gates Framework
In this practice, we begin by drawing a mandala with four gates. As we move around the circle, we pause at each gate and gently notice what is present within us.
Each gate corresponds to one of the elements and one aspect of our lived experience:
Air | Thoughts, mental chatter, and self-critical patterns that arise while creating.
Water | Emotions, vulnerability, and feeling that move beneath the surface.
Earth | The body and its sensations. Fatigue, tension, comfort, or resistance.
Fire | Desire, frustration, restlessness, and creative longing.
Nothing that appears is wrong. Nothing needs to be fixed.
We simply notice. We respond with compassion. We continue creating.
As each gate is met with kindness, we move toward the center of the mandala. The center represents integration. It is a gentle reminder that all parts of us belong. When our thoughts, emotions, body, and desires are welcomed rather than judged, we begin to feel more whole.
A Gentle Practice of Transformation
This is more than an art project. It is a spiritual practice rooted in attention and compassion.
Through repeated engagement with the Four Gates, we begin to observe patterns in ourselves. We notice how self-criticism softens when it is acknowledged. We see how emotions shift when they are allowed. We experience how the body responds when we slow down and listen.
Art making becomes a compassionate conversation with ourselves.
This practice is accessible whether you are new to mandalas or have years of creative experience. You do not need technical precision. You do not need artistic confidence. You only need a willingness to show up honestly and respond with care.
Through this steady process, something subtle begins to shift. Awareness deepens. Self-trust grows. Compassion extends beyond the page and into daily life.
Art as a Doorway to Awareness
Many spiritual practices ask us to sit still and quiet the mind. The Four Gates Mandala Practice takes a different approach. Instead of setting aside thoughts and emotions, we engage them through art making.
The movement of the hand, the repetition of form, and the structure of the four gates create a container where awareness unfolds naturally.
