This post is part of my Traveling by Moonlight series, where we pause at the new and full moons to create mandala art, set intentions, and release what no longer serves us. Today’s focus is on the energies of the Cancer full moon, happening two weeks after the Capricorn new moon. The Cancer full moon is on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Full Moon Reflection
At the Capricorn new moon, many of us set intentions, New Year’s resolutions, or goals for the year. Perhaps you created a vision board or chose a word to guide you through the year. However, by the time the full moon arrives, those well-laid plans may feel overwhelming if the bar was set too high.
The Cancer full moon invites us to pause and nurture ourselves amidst any tension or overwhelm we may feel. Cancer, a watery, emotional sign, often stirs up intense feelings—anxiety, withdrawal, or even sadness. Like the crab retreating into its shell, we might feel the urge to shield ourselves.
Yet Cancer also offers the gift of balance. Opposite Capricorn on the zodiac wheel, Cancer reminds us to temper work-driven ambition with the comforts of home and emotional connection. One way to embrace Cancer’s nurturing energy is by leaning into the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga).
What is Hygge?
Hygge is the Danish art of creating warmth, coziness, and connection. It’s about savoring small, meaningful moments, whether through candlelight, shared meals, or quiet evenings with loved ones.
I experienced hygge firsthand in Copenhagen during a serene boat ride along the canals. The wooden, electric boat—aptly named Hygge—set the perfect mood. Eight strangers boarded, and as the boat glided through the water, we exchanged stories and laughter, feeling an instant bond. By the end, even the skipper was amazed at the warmth and connection among us. That experience encapsulated the essence of hygge: the glow of togetherness and gratitude.

Bringing Hygge to Your Mandala Practice
You can incorporate hygge into your mandala practice to create a cozy and inspiring ritual. Here’s how:
- Set the Mood: Light a candle or use soft, warm lighting.
- Get Cozy: Put on your favorite sweater, cozy socks, or wrap yourself in a blanket.
- Beverage Bliss: Brew a cup of tea, coffee, or hot cocoa.
- Add Sound: Play calming instrumental music.
- Comfort Snacks: Keep a small treat nearby.
- Journal Nearby: Use a notebook to jot down ideas, gratitudes, or memories.
- Gather Your Supplies: Have your mandala tools ready, such as pens, markers, or stencils.
Creating a Hygge-Inspired Mandala
- Start with a Stencil: Use the Four Gates Mandala stencils (from StencilGirl Products) to outline your design.
- Draw a Center: Create a circle with a relaxed, wavy edge for an organic feel.
- Section Your Mandala: Divide the space with vertical and horizontal lines. Vary the sizes and shapes of the sections for interest.
- Add Hygge Elements: In each section, doodle symbols or objects that represent hygge for you.

My Hygge Mandala
At the center of my mandala is my cozy home—a symbol of comfort and belonging. Surrounding it, I’ve added elements that evoke hygge in my life:
- Laurel Burch-inspired cat: Representing my orange tabby, Milo.
- Sun and moon: A nod to astrology and my blog series, Traveling by Moonlight.
- Chai cup, coffee pot, and candle: Simple pleasures that warm my heart.
- Envelope: My love for sending and receiving handwritten letters.
- Mandala and cards: Representing my passion for divination and creativity.
- Winged heart: A symbol of my passion projects, particularly True North Arts.
- Swirl of brown: Inspired by Swedish fika—a cherished coffee and treat break with friends.

My hygge moment: My dear friend Anne sent me the most delightful chai blend (from Yatri Chai). How very Cancer of her to gift me comfort in a cup. The Finnish bread (from Teacup Baking Co) is lightly toasted with cream cheese and smoked salmon (from Liberty Fish)
By infusing your mandala practice with hygge, you create not just art but an experience that nurtures your soul. Pause, reflect, and embrace the warm glow of connection—whether it’s with yourself, your surroundings, or others. Happy creating!
